by Tiina Randviir

With the support of the Estonian Ministry of Culture, the Estonian Literature Information Centre organised an international seminar of translators of Estonian literature, which took place on 12–16 June 2008 in Käsmu. This was the largest gathering of people involved in Estonian literature abroad. The participants came from 17 countries: USA, Bulgaria, Holland, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Mari Republic, Norway, France, Sweden, Germany, Finland, Great Britain, Czech Republic, Udmurtia, Hungary and Estonia – about fifty people altogether. Two British publishing  houses were also represented – Arc Publications (poetry) and the Norvik Press which has undertaken to publish Tammsaare in English translation.

The translators listened to lectures about Estonian poetry (Jürgen Rooste), drama (Anneli Saro), prose (Märt Väljataga), essay and memoir-writing (Marek Tamm) and language (Krista Kerge); they also had the chance to talk to Estonian writers, such as Maimu Berg, Mehis Heinsaar, Andrei Hvostov, Jaan Kaplinski, Doris Kareva, Andrus Kivirähk, Asko Künnap, Ene Mihkelson, Mihkel Mutt, Jürgen Rooste, Karl Martin Sinijärv, Tiia Toomet and Tõnu Õnnepalu.
